How Tall is Abraham Lincoln? Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is undoubtedly a person-symbol, not only for his country but also for a high global ideal: _”freedom and equality of people regardless of gender, race, and color”. _

The presence of Abraham Lincoln in the history of his country became a legend, as his name was recorded in speeches, articles, and proclamations, all of which are of monumental value. His name is positively connected to the civil war and the liberation of the enslaved black people, as well as with issues of organization and operation of the state.

Biography

Abraham Lincoln was born in February 1809 in a Kentucky village hut. He was the son of Thomas Lincoln – a small farmer- and Nancy Hanks; the third child after a girl and a boy, who died after their birth. He lost his mother when he was 8-years-old, a fact that traumatized him for the rest of his life.

His father soon remarried a widow called Sarah Bush Johnson, mother of three. Little Abraham was very attached to her, as he admired her straightforward and dumb character. Although illiterate, like his father, Sarah Bush pressured him to “learn to write, read and count”. This was an unknown occupation for the 10-year-old villager. From the first moment, he was literally enchanted, as he would say more than 30 years later when as a self-taught lawyer he ran for Illinois State, where he had settled since 1834.

Early Life

A lonely guy in the first twenty years of his life, _tall (6’4″, 193cm)_ and almost skeletal, with a thunderous voice. He gets a sense of society and social life when he moves alone to New Salem, and to make a living he works as a postman, a night watchman in a warehouse, and finally buys a shop where “everyone could find everything”, as he wrote at the entrance. This shop literally transformed young Abraham.

He learned to communicate with the world, to see their lives, their problems, to give advice to girls who were afraid of their clergy, and to separate people ready to be killed for a piece of barren land. It was this world that in 1832 put him at the head of a squad in the pseudo-war with a local tribe of Indians. He did not reap the laurels of war but made acquaintances with persons of economic and political power who threw him into politics.

Career

Along the way, he joins the Whigs Conservative Party, comes in regular contact with the ruling class of the State, and forms for the first time some thoughts and ideas about black slaves. He does not see their situation as a matter of moral and human order, like many of his educated and clerical fellow citizens.

Distinguishing his financial side, he notes that a free black man pays almost twice as much as a black slave, for the same job. He discusses this with his acquaintances in the party but finds them not just apathetic but hostile. It was their attitude that made him acquire legal knowledge, so that “at least in the courts” he would present the “inhuman problem of slavery”.

In 1854, he ran against Senator Steve Douglas for the State Senate. He won the Presidential elections on November 6, 1860, but without the support of the South.

The night of April 14, 1865, he was shot by a “hard South”, John Wilkes Booth. He died nine hours later in a house opposite the theater.
